Steps To Erasing A Hard Drive Home

Why you need to know the steps to erasing a hard drive

While most computer users spend most of their time trying to keep the data on their computers safe from harm, there are times when every computer users will need to know the steps to erasing a hard drive, and follow those steps carefully. There are many reasons why a computer user would want to erase the information held on a hard drive, including when the computer is being sold or given to a new user, or when the computer contains information the owner does not want others to see.

When it comes to the steps to erasing a hard drive it is important to know that truly getting rid of the data a computer contains can be a difficult and painstaking process. When you lose a file, whether you accidentally delete it or erase it on purpose, you may think it is impossible to get that file back, but in fact it is quite easy for those with the right knowledge and the right tools. Both the knowledge of how to recover erased computer files and the tools to do it, are widely available on the internet, and anyone with even a modicum of computer knowledge can usually easily recover even the most carefully erased files.

There are of course steps computer users can take to truly erase the data their hard drives contain. The first step of course is simply to open Windows Explorer, right click on the files and click Delete from the menu. This will place the deleted file into the Recycle Bin. The next step to erasing the file is to empty the Recycle Bin, and at this point the file may appear to be gone. In reality, however, the file is still there, and the right software can easily bring it back. If you truly want to erase the file you will need to use one of the many commercial file wiping or disk wiping products on the market. While it may seem unnecessary to take this extra step, doing so will give you the peace of mind that comes with knowing your data is safe from prying eyes.

When it comes to erasing the hard drive itself, the steps are similar, but the first step is to format the hard drive, using either the restore CD that came with the PC or the utilities provided with the operating system. After the drive has been erased, it is important to use one of those disk wiping software programs to make sure that the drive is truly cleaned of data. It is not enough to simply erase the data that was previously on the drive, it is necessary to overwrite that previous data with ones and zeroes. This last step is definitely needed in order to prevent the data from being recovered by a clever computer user.
