Reformating Hard Drive Home

Tips for reformating a hard drive

There are of course many times when reformating a hard drive is necessary and even desirable, but it is important to know when such a step is, and is not, appropriate. There are many steps computer owners can take short of wiping out the information on the hard drive and starting over, and it is important to know when to use this step and when to take other measures.

One common reason computer users will reformat their hard drive is slow or poor performance, but it is important to rule out some common problems before resorting to reformating the hard drive. For instance, it is easy to pick up a great deal of spyware, adware and other malicious software just by surfing the web and reading email. Investing in a good anti-spyware and anti-adware program can save computer users a lot of grief, and it may even make it unnecessary to reformat that hard drive and start from scratch.

Many computer users also assume that it is necessary to reformat the hard drive and start from scratch when the computer has caught a nasty virus, and in some cases this is certainly the case. Before reformating the hard drive, however, it is a good idea to do some research on the virus. In many cases there will be removal tools available, either from your own antivirus software vendors or from another vendor. These cleaning utilities are often very good at removing viruses, Trojan horses and other types of malicious software, and they may bring the PC back to new without the need to reformat.

In some cases, however, it is not only desirable but in fact vital to reformat the hard drive. One of the best reasons for reformating a hard drive is when the PC is being sold to another user or even given to a charity. The steep drop in the prices of new desktop and laptop computers has resulted in a flood of used PCs on the market, and giving the PC to a worthy cause, or selling it to recoup some expenses, is always a good idea. However, it is important to properly prepare the PC for its new home, by reformatting the hard drive and removing any files that may contain personal data. With so many shopping online, doing our taxes online and even investing online, the need to wipe out personal data is more important than ever. Before selling or giving away a PC, it is essential to not only reformat the hard drive, but to use some sort of disk wiping program to make sure the data is truly gone. It is important to properly clean any computer of personal data before handing it off to a new owner.
