What you need to know to format a hard drive
When it comes time to format a hard drive, many people are unsure of how to proceed. There are a number of different ways to format hard drives in order to make them the most efficient and reliable, and it is important to follow proper guidelines and specifications in order to get the most out of any new hard drive. Hard drive formatting is not at all difficult, and the many software tools on the market today make it easier to get a new drive off to a good start much easier than it used to be. Back when computers first came on the market, there was only one way to format a hard drive, and it often took a great deal of knowledge and computer expertise to get the job done the right way. These days, however, formatting a hard drive can be as simple as firing up Windows XP or another operating system and navigating to the right spot. For Windows XP, this spot is My Computer, and all it takes to format a secondary hard drive is to right click on My Computer, choose the letter representing the new drive, and clicking format. A verification message will appear, and after you have agreed, the drive will be formatted to your specification. These days, most hard drives will be formatted using the popular NTFS file system. This file system makes much better use of space than the older FAT32 file system, resulting in better file storage and more efficient use of space. The NTFS file system also provides for easier and faster data recovery, and most manufacturers recommend using this file system when formatting a new hard drive. Of course the NTFS file system is not always appropriate, and it is important to determine the appropriate format before beginning to format the hard drive. In some cases, such as on certain dual boot systems, you will want to format the drive in FAT32 or even FAT16 format, so it is always important to consider what the drive will be doing before beginning the format. After the drive has been formatted properly, it is important to institute a consistent backup and hard drive maintenance program. Maintaining the drive properly will help you keep it in the best condition, thus reducing the chances of a hard drive failure. At the same time, instituting a good backup program will help you easily recover in case there is a failure. Formatting the hard drive is only the beginning. It is important to take proper care of the drive that holds your valuable data. |
